I have a really long list of movies to watch and I often have thoughts on them so if I’m already talking to the void I might as well publish them here too.

this weekend I watched like five things

• paris, texas (1984), dir. Wim Wenders
• trouble every day (2001), dir. Claire Denis
• the brown bunny (2003), dir. Vincent Gallo
• mysterious skin (2006), dir. Gregg Araki
• 500 days of summer (2009), dir. Marc Webb

I started with paris, texas because my boyfriend wasn’t texting back fast enough and I wanted something to take my mind off of it because I was apparently going completely insane. probably my favourite movie of the weekend, which shouldn’t be surprising really. the lighting and cinematography and sets were so so so so pretty. And the scenes through the window – there was such gorgeous tension in the way it let us see both characters faces at the same time. i was on the edge of my seat watching two people talk and not every director can do that. i was thoroughly distracted, 10/10.

trouble every day was alright, but not as interesting as I expected. I felt like I was always a step ahead of the film. that being said, I feel like it had a clear directorial vision, so maybe thats the tradeoff. can you tell I have no idea what I’m talking about?

brown bunny is a strange film by a strange man, but I didn’t hate it as much as people seem to think it should be hated. the ending was bad, the sex scene was indulgent at best, the entire plot felt contrived. but in a surrealist way… I kind of get it. I really like the long driving scenes, the music is effective, it’s such a soothing and pervasively gloomy movie… at least it makes me feel something? I think that gallo is more of a satirist than people give him credit for, a creep nonetheless but an extremely self aware one. People forget that in his own movie he plays some whiny, pathetic little man… it doesn’t feel like a power fantasy to me, or at least not in the traditional sense. anyone who hasn’t should check out his website, not that I endorse any of it’s contents. I considered emailing him. I think I have the right look, he might just respond.

mysterious skin was good but so much more disturbing than I was expecting. I went into it knowing nothing except that it had michelle tractenburg and joseph gordon levitt in it. just really sad, well done way to handle the topic though and I’ll definitely watch more by the director.

500 days of summer is a favourite. I just love it far more than I should, to be honest. it may be cheesy but it feels to me just like falling in love. i don’t want to write openly about relationships here but it made me feel way better about my personal life.
