tarot reading is the practice of using tarot cards for divination. playing cards have been used to divine since the 15th century, but the use of a tarot deck dates back to around the 1780s. First appearing in france, the practice spread throughout the world.
the tarot deck itself is usually made up of 78 cards, divided into the major and minor arcana, or greater and lesser secrets. There are 22 major arcana cards numbered 0-21 and 56 minor arcana cards. Minor arcana cards are divided into four suites: cups, pentacles/coins, wands/staffs, and swords. Each suite has a king, queen, knight, page, ace and numbers 2-10. Cards of the same type often share similar meanings or significance.
there are many varying ways to do tarot, and every practitioner has their own rituals or practices. drawing tarot cards often involves shuffling your deck and placing cards into a certain shape, or “spread”, face down, then flipping each card over and interpreting it. Many people meditate, cleanse, or set their intention before performing tarot. There is no wrong way to practice, everyone has their own way of doing things and that’s what makes it so personal and useful.
on this blog i plan to make a series of posts outlining the significance of each card, as well as a few different spreads and techniques. Stay posted!
