What is a sigil and how do I use one? Sigils are a really useful and practical part of majick that can be incorporated into many other techniques or utilized on their own. This post will take you through what sigils are, what you can use them for and how to make and activate sigils.
What is a sigil?
A sigil is a majickal symbol that represents an idea or intention. Sigils can be used to influence your surroundings or inner world. Sigils are very useful in protection, glamours, charms and for many other purposes. Historically, sigils have represented angels and demons or specific and standardised occult forces, used to summon them. In modern chaos majick, sigils are often created by practitioners for their own personal use.
What can I use sigils for?
There are virtually unlimited ways to use sigils. One can create and utilize sigils for protection majick, charms, glamours, money majick, and so much more. You can draw and activate sigils almost anywhere: You can carve them into candles, draw them on your skin when applying cosmetics, write them on paper, carve them into your food or so many other things. Sigils are at their most effective when integrated into larger workings like bowl or bag spells.
How do I create sigils?
There is no wrong way to draw a sigil. One of the most common ways to draw a sigil is to write down an affirmation or statement of intention, cross out all the vowels and repeating letters, then make an abstract symbol out of the letters that are left. However, this is not the only way to create a sigil. You can use sigil squares, existing symbols or any other method and as long as you have that intention and association, your sigil will work just as well.
How do I activate and use a sigil?
There are several ways to activate and use your sigils. You can activate your sigil by burning it or otherwise destroying it, or you can write it and leave it somewhere. Destructible sigils like this are usually temporary and wear off after a while. A sigil that you create and leave intact can also be charged and cleansed with intention, smoke or herbs, usually repeatedly.
